Golf in Jersey
Jersey golf courses offer a unique choice of golfing experiences in the most memorable of settings. From the adjoining La Moye Golf Course with its panoramic ocean vistas and Les Mielles Golf Course in the heart of the island’s conservation area below The Atlantic to the historic Royal Jersey Golf Club in the east, home of Harry Vardon.
Getting to Jersey
Getting to Jersey with golf clubs is fairly easy, albeit potentially a little expensive. Most airlines see clubs as a regular piece of luggage and you would just pay the same price as you would a suitcase, depending on the airline. It is always an option to bring half a set of clubs in order to save some space. Playing with half a set of clubs is more than sufficient and actually something I like to do in practice occasionally. However, most golf courses on the Island will be able to provide you with a hire set for a reasonable price.
My favourite nine holes
With six great golf courses to choose from on the Island, here are my favourite nine holes.
The 1st hole at the Royal Jersey Golf Club. Starting my round with a par 5 along the beach, with Gorey Castle in the background, doesn’t get much better. I always like starting with a par 5 as it gives you a good chance to get your round started with a good score.
The 9th hole at Les Ormes Golf Club. A par 3 with an elevated tee where you have to carry the foliage in front of you. You won’t need much more than a 7 iron, which makes it manageable, but this hole always gets my attention.
The 7th hole at La Moye Golf Club is another great hole, as it requires some good course management by laying up off the tee. It also has some great views of St Ouen’s Beach.
The 2nd hole at La Moye Golf Club, which is a dogleg par 5 with a bit of a risk-reward off the tee if you want to cut off some of the corner, and you’ll have a great view of The Atlantic Hotel as you walk over the hill towards the green.
The 17th at Royal Jersey. This is a relatively long par 4, but the tee is slightly elevated and you get a good view of a lot of other holes on the course. Here you will aim straight at the Fort down the left side of the fairway. The green is elevated so be sure to take enough club.
The reachable par 4 3rd hole at Les Mielles Golf Club . This is a high risk-reward. You can lay up with an iron leaving yourself with a short approach shot, but where’s the fun in that? I always like to give it a go on this hole.
The 1st hole at Les Ormes. The views are stunning and it’s always cool to be able to see the planes land on the runway close by. It’s a relatively straightforward par 4, but the views definitely make it worth playing.
The 4th hole at Royal Jersey. A nice par 3, with amazing views of the beach, Gorey Pier, and Gorey Castle. My only advice on this hole would be to aim at the front portion of the green as the ball tends to keep rolling towards the hole.
The 16th at La Moye. Standing on that back tee with the views of St Ouen’s beach and the ocean is just breathtaking. You can see for miles and it is easy to forget where you are. I like this par 5 as it is not too tricky, you just need to avoid the bunkers. I always feel rewarded when I make a birdie on this hole.
